mind-the-gap is an artistic web-project focussing on the topic "handicap". the project offers a platform for handicapped as well as non-handicapped artists, intends to link them with each other, to encourage communication and to make the public part of the discussion. The project promotes - besides self-organisation of handicapped people - an offensive approach to the topic "handicap".

the website offers a platform for artists to present their works online - including audio, video, pictures and text in the course of one year. The works of art invite the users to join the discussion and give feedback to the works as well as the topic itself. Thereby we intend to kick off a communicative process, which allows the user and the artist to exchange their thoughts and impressions about the differences of their situations.

A so called "handicapped interface" makes the user experience daily situations of a handicapped person - reduction of senses, movement, communication. The loss of control is transferred to the website. Writing, cursor navigation, perception of pictures and text - the whole interface, whose usability is natural to us - is irritated, sabotaged and deconstructed.
